Kaprun. Stausee Mooserboden

We can see one of the components of the hydroelectric power station of the Austrian municipality of Kaprun. The reservoir of Mooserboden is located at the foot of Großes Wiesbachhorn. The total area of the artificial reservoir is more than 1.5 square kilometers, and the maximum volume of water is nearly 85 million cubic meters.

Mooserboden is only part of the complex of Kaprun power plant. The main reservoir, Vasserfalboden, is closer to the village. The height of the reservoir, which you see on the screen, is two kilometers above sea level and Wasserfallboden is at around 1672 meters.

The huge dams, built here in the middle of the last century, can be considered the local sites because thousands of tourists come to this remote corner of Austria every year to see these mountain dams. One of the dams, a gravity dam called Moosersperre, has a height of 107 meters with a length of 494 meters. The arch dam, Drossen, is even higher, though only by five meters. At the maximum load, the thick walls of the dam bend to five centimeters.
