Paris. View of the City from Saint-Germain-des-Prés

The camera is just a kilometer from the center of Paris. In the right part of the image, the tower of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is visible. This church was founded in the VI century and for many years has been the intellectual center of France. Dozens of French kings are buried in the Abbey.

In this part of Paris, jazz clubs began to open just after the Second World War. Soon, real jazz fever embraced the city: both young and old Parisians fell in love with a new style of music.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is also known as the center of the literary life of the last century. Great French philosophers and writers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir liked to visit local cafes. There are also sad pages in the history of the district; in 1965, the opposition leader of Morocco, whose body has never been found, was abducted here.
