Brunico. View of the Community from Teodone district
We can see the historical center of the Pustertal Valley. This town in northern Italy, with a population of 16,000 people, is conveniently located between high mountains, one of which is the popular ski resort, Kronplatz. Brunico, contrary to the Italian tradition, was named after the man who founded the town, Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg.
In the thirteenth century, when this city originated, a castle was built over it.
The rapid development of Brunico is due to the advantageous location of the town, where the trade route from Germany to Venice passed. Along with the economy, the city’s infrastructure was developing but, unfortunately, a lot of the ancient buildings were burned during the major fire in 1723.
However, over the past 300 years, many beautiful buildings have been built in Brunico. Guests of the city can see churches, towers and ordinary houses with a long history. The castles, Brunico and Sonnenburg, attract the greatest attention of tourists, as well as the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which has been rebuilt for 500 years! The most recent major changes to the structure of the church date back to 1853, when the architect chose the Romanesque Revival style for the building.
