Kaliningrad. Historic Kneiphof Area
On your screen, you can see Kneiphof, the island part of the city of Kaliningrad. The camera is installed at the lighthouse to the southeast of the island, in the Rybnaya Derevnya quarter. On the screen, we can see the Dome Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Adalbert, the central and most significant object on the island of Immanuel Kant. In the eastern part of the cathedral is the grave of the German philosopher, after whom the island was named.
The cathedral was built between 1333 and 1380. Then, for many years, the new architectural dominant of Koenigsberg had been completed. For example, in 1553, towers were built at the facades of the cathedral. One of the spires of the towers was decorated with a mermaid weathercock. Unfortunately, the rich interior decoration of the church burned down during the bombing of 1945, but the building itself stood firm. Reconstructions and restorations took place only in the 1990s.
Kneiphof had been one of the three cities of Koenigsberg since the beginning of the 14th century. Trade and shipping had been developing successfully for many years. Besides the cathedral, Kneiphof has its own town hall.
Also, we can see a couple of bridges. On the right is a small Honeymoon Bridge, on the left is the Overpass Bridge. Both of them either lead or pass through the island of Kant. In the old days, 5 bridges led to the island. Thanks to them, the well-known among mathematicians graph theory, based on the problem of “seven bridges”, was created.
