Chiang Khan District. The Mekong River
We can see the border of Thailand and Laos, which passes along the Mekong River at this point, and divides the Thai province of Loei from the Laotian prefecture of Vientiane. In addition to the Mekong, the Hueyang and Loei Rivers play an important role in the region.
Chiang Khan was founded in the late nineteenth century. Refugees from Laos and, later, from China and Vietnam settled here. The city quickly became the shopping center of the region due to its successful location on the banks of the Mekong.
Over the last decades of the last century, trade between neighboring countries has plummeted due to the communist transformations in Laos. But, since the beginning of the 21st century, economic relations between Chiang Khan and Xanam Khan have once again reached their previous level.
The city is developing largely due to the fishing sector of the economy because the Mekong is home to a large number of different freshwater fish.
