Pripyat. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station
Chernobyl disaster happened in far 1986, but still remains the world’s largest nuclear accident. Reactor number 4 was destroyed and later covered with a sarcophagus to prevent further escape of radioactivity.
This webcam faces the New Safe Confinement, a part of the first sarcophagus can also be seen to the right. The arch of the New Safe Confinement is 257 metres wide, 162 metres long and 108 metres high. Its estimated service life is declared to be 100 years. The New Safe Confinement is designed by engineers from USA and built by the French consortium Novarka with VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bouygues Travaux Publics as partners. The whole project is expected to be finished by 2017.
