Evanston. The Rock at Northwestern
In front of us there is literally a “living” monument of the city of Evanston in the vicinity of Chicago. The camera is installed in the building of the University Hall of Northwestern University. The Rock of Northwestern was brought from the Devil’s Lake area in Wisconsin and set on the site in 1902.
Originally, the Rock was the center of a fountain composition, but, over time, students began to vandalize it and use it to voice opinions on different issues such as the Vietnam War and WWII.
Usually, a student who wants to make notes on the Rock must stake out a spot at the Rock and guard it for 24 hours before he can repaint it or write a message on it. In 1989, this object of interest had to be moved a bit from its original place due to the landscaping work on campus.
