Kittery. Appledore Island
The surveillance camera is installed on the largest island of the Isles of Shoals, in the United States. Appledore, formerly known as Hog Island, is located about 11 kilometers from the states of Maine and New Hampshire and is part of the town of Kittery.
Appledore Island was inhabited by Europeans in the colonial era. The first church appeared on the island in long ago 1640. After the island had become part of the US, it was fancied by artists who painted their famous pictures here, one of whom was Celia Thaxter.
Based on the island is the Shoals Marine Laboratory, which is part of two American universities, Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Students of these educational institutions, mainly undergraduates, regularly come here for internships. On the island there are many solar panels, both stand-alone and mounted on the roofs of buildings. They supply the laboratory with necessary electricity.
We are looking at Appledore Island from a high viewing tower. It was built for radar observations during the Second World War, but it has never been used for its intended purpose. Now, the radar tower is the best observation point on the whole island.
