Heiligenblut am Großglockner. Grossglockner High Alpine Road
We are looking at the mountain hotel, Berggasthof Wallackhaus, at Mount Grossglockner. Recently, the mountain has become popular due to the road built here. Now, a journey through the Alps is no longer an extreme pastime, at least on these slopes.
In summer, tourists can get here by motorcycle or car, the most desperate nature lovers prefer cycling.
Panoramic Austrian Grossglockner road connects the lands of Salzburg and Carinthia and passes Tauern National Park. The road is almost fifty kilometers long and is a serpentine with thirty-six turns. The maintenance of the road, for obvious reasons, is expensive, so one must pay to use the roadway.
This road was put into operation as early as in the 1940s. Its construction noticeably revived this region of Austria. The very next day, after the opening of the road, Grossglockner Races were held there. Despite the fact that the road was a paid one from the very beginning, in the very first year it was used by three times more tourists than expected (nearly four hundred thousand).
