Matrei am Brenner. Maria Valdrast Monastery

Despite the abundance of ski resorts around Innsbruck, there are other tourist programs that include not only sports, but also visits to historical sights and various architectural monuments. One of the monuments we can see on the screen.

The community of Matrei am Brenner is 25 kilometers south of Innsbruck. The camera is installed in the western region of this village, Maria Waldrast. The area is named after the famous monastery, to which a huge number of tourists come every year, not only believers but also people interested in history and architecture.

The pilgrimage monastery is built at an altitude of 1,638 meters above sea level. The place for construction was not chosen accidentally. According to legend, in 1407, local people saw a tree with miraculous power in the place of the modern monastery. In 1429, a chapel was built near the tree.

In the 19th century, more than 40,000 pilgrims visited the monastery every year. Today, this architectural site and important religious monument is no less popular among the guests of Austria. Many elements of the building remain intact, such as the nave of the 15th century and interiors in the early baroque style.
