Zell am See District. Mölltal Valley
Mölltal Valley, which we can see in the picture, got its name after the Möll River, running through the valley. Many trains went through the valley at the beginning of the last century, but then the county traffic decreased considerably. The main attraction of the valley is Tauerntunnel.
The tunnel’s length is more than eight kilometers. When its construction began in 1901, the project was considered one of the most difficult in the history of building. The tunnel was opened in 1906 and it took about twenty years to electrify it. The tunnel still functions to this day.
We are looking at Mölltal from Sonnblick Observatory (3106 meters). The meteorological observatory has operated for more than 100 years. The ideal location, away from air pollution, emissions and the crowds of tourists, allows researchers to conduct important research work there.
