Bilzen. Alden Biesen Castle
Alden Biesen Castle appeared in the southern suburbs of Bilzen in the 16th century and, at first, served as the headquarters of the Knights of the Teutonic Order. The castle was named after one of the commanders of this order. It is interesting that the Teutonic Order occupied the modern territory of the castle as far back as the 12th century, but it was only after four centuries that such a grandiose structure was built.
The castle’s camera shows all its main parts — the outer courtyard, the vestibule and the inner garden. The castle is built in a classical baroque style. In addition to the castle and gardens, the Alden Bisen complex also includes a church. During various festivals, temporary tents for participants and guests are built on the grounds of the castle.
Unfortunately, the castle has not survived to this day in its original form. After a major fire on March 8, 1971, the local government bought out the burnt building and had to restore many elements of Alden Bisen, almost from scratch. The reconstruction was finally completed in 2011.
Today, the castle is used as a cultural center and a conference center. In addition, various festivals, such as the Scottish weekend and the International History Festival, are held here.
