Sittard. Market Square

The small medieval town of Sittard is nestled in the narrow Dutch section between Belgium and Germany. We can see the city center. The Market Square (60 by 70 meters) is surrounded by restaurants and bars, hotels and shops, as well as architectural monuments.

The camera is located in the northwestern part of the square next to the Hotel De Limbourg, with rooms from 99 euros, and the Catholic Church of St. Michael, built in 1661. From the square, you can see another religious landmark of Sittard, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

This Market Square in Sittard is considered new. Until 1300, the original city square was in a different place. Earlier, in the center of the modern square was the city hall but, in 1677, it was destroyed during the Franco-Dutch war. Later, the town hall was rebuilt on the square, but it was built on one of the sides.

As you can see, the square is full of the tables of local restaurants. Even in winter, some residents and visitors of the city prefer to eat in fresh, frosty air.

At the Market Square, various city events and festivities are held, including the annual student carnival. There is an ice rink in the center of the square in winter.
