The Royal Palace is a popular tourist attraction in Phnom Penh. Its visitors can see the Silver Pagoda, the Throne Hall and Chan Chhaya Pavilion. The Silver Pagoda offers exhibition of the national treasures, especially precious Buddha statues. The Throne Hall is still in use today as a place for religious and royal ceremonies, like coronations and weddings. Chan Chhaya Pavilion means ” The Moonlight Pavilion” and serves until present time as a place for traditional Khmer dance.
Phnom Penh is far from being a top destination for tourists. Its hotels usually have many free rooms even during the best season. Still, the city has many attractions and a very rich history with many tragic pages…
Khmer Rouge, the followers of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, were the ruling party in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. They constantly tormented and tortured civil population of the entire city. Hundreds of people lost their homes and many of them were declared political enemies and killed.
