Omiš. Panorama of the City

The Croatian town of Omiš is located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The rich cultural heritage of Omiš allows tourists to enjoy not only a beach holiday, but also the sights of the city; there are many of them, including medieval churches, forts and fortresses.

The ruins of the fortress of Mirabella rise above the mouth of the Cetina River. For centuries, the fortress successfully defended the city from invaders. According to the legend, in 1537, the locals deceived the Turkish attackers. The defenders of Omiš made a loud cry, which created the illusion of a large army presence, and the Turks decided to retreat in face of the perceived superior enemy forces.

Another castle is in Starigrad. It is built on the mountain, which you can see in the background. It was to serve as a place to retreat from invaders.
