Pieksamaki. Main Square

A webcam is in the center of the town of Pieksämäki, known for the Chernobyl disaster, which affected the surrounding nature. The ponds, meadows, and forests surrounding the town were contaminated with radioactive substances.

Traces of infection are still found here after decades. You shouldn’t pick up mushrooms, berries or go fishing there, although scientists say that the substances found in local fish, mushrooms, and fruit are not dangerous to humans.
