Bremen. The Square in front of Bahnhof-Vegesack Station
Vegesack, which is the urban district of Bremen, was a poor fishing village until the 17th century. In 1623, a port was built at the crossing place of three rivers, Weser, Aue and Wümme. This is Germany’s first artificial port with a harbor depth of four meters, a width of 30 meters, and a length of 78 meters.
The port used to host whaling boats that fed the town, so on the quay and in the port they installed sculptures of these huge water mammals.
Nowadays, the port accepts passenger ferries plying between the towns on the Weser River. Sometimes, you can see sailing boats at the berths too.
