Rostock. The Eastern Part of the Old Town
Old Europe amuses us with its medieval sites. In the German city of Rostock, we are not far from the Baltic Sea. Here, in the eastern part of the old town, are the churches of St. Nicholas and St. Peter.
The unusual square tower, which you can see, belongs to the church of St. Nicholas. It was built in 1230 and, today, it is one of the oldest churches in the Baltic Sea region. St. Nicholas Church is not a church in the usual sense. Rather, it is a spiritual and cultural center of the city, open to both religious and secular people.
On the left, you can see the church of St. Peter. Like most churches in the city, it belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran community. Its height is 117 meters, which makes the church the tallest in the city. In the middle of the last millennium, the church was 10 meters higher but its destruction by lightning in 1543 was considered to be a bad sign, so the restored roof was built 10 meters lower.
