Courmayeur. Panorama of the Commune from the Ski Slopes

The popular ski resort of Courmayeur is located in the northwestern part of Italy, near the French border. The community is built in the Aosta Valley, which is now part of the autonomous region of Valle d’Aosta. There are not more than 3,000 residents but at the height of the ski season, there are many more people on the streets of the resort.

Courmayeur is the first settlement on the way from the Mont Blanc Tunnel when travelling from the French town of Chamonix. Tourists come here in both winter and summer to go on shiking trip through the mountains. Among the natural attractions worth seeing, apart from the high mountains, is the landslide of Mont de la Saхe, the area of which exceeds 8 million square meters.

Initially Courmayeur was a spa resort. Back in the 12th century, people came here for the thermal sulfur sources. In the 18th century, it was visited by conquerors of the mountain peaks, who began their ascent to the top of Mont Blanc from this settlement. It was only in the 20th century that Courmayeur became one of the largest Alpine ski resorts known throughout the world.
