Ortona. View of the Coast from the Sea
We are looking at the port of Marina di Ortona, of the Italian city of Ortona, located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Yachts, boats and jet skis in the foreground should not mislead you: though the city is partially a tourist destination, and there is even a small sandy beach there, trucking is the port’s main occupation. If you look closely, in the background you can see cranes and other infrastructure of the port, which helps to fill the city’s budget. The main areas of Ortona are not on the coast, but behind it — on the hill overlooking the sea.
In order to not spoil the ideal roads of the city, a railroad leads directly into the port so that cargo is delivered deep into the peninsula.
In the city, you can meet religious people from all over the world, due to the relics of Apostle Thomas that reside there. This saint is the patron saint of Ortona. His remains have been in Basilica Concattedrale di San Tommaso Apostolo since the XIII century, and the church itself was built 100 years before the death of the Apostle.
