Rēzekne. Liberation Square and Latgales Mara

Rēzekne is the 7th largest city of the country and one of the most important cities of the Latgalia region (eastern Latvia). Liberation square, captured by our webcam, is first of all famous for the statue of Mara, which stands there. This monument was erected in 1939 to celebrate the liberation of Latgalia from foreign rulers.

The monument of Latgales Mara consists of three parts. Its central female figure, called “Māra” after the ancient Latvian goddess of earth-mother, brandishes a Christian cross in her outstretched arm, what symbolizes the deep influence of Catholicism to Latgalian culture.

History of this monument is long and complicated. It was removed twice during the Soviet occupation, but re-erected in 1992 after the liberation of Latvia.

When visiting this square and the famous Latgales Mara, do not forget to take a look at two beautiful churches, located nearby (one is Russian Orthodox and the other one is Catholic).
