Elburg. The City Gate

The camera in the historic Dutch city of Elburg is set on the historic Jufferenstraat, in the city museum building. The street starts directly from the city gates, Vischpoort, which can be seen at the end of the street in the background.

The Tower gate of the city (if you look closely, you can see the clock) appeared in Elburg at the beginning of the fifteenth century and was first used as a defensive structure. At the end of the sixteenth century, the city significantly increased in size and the gates of the city ceased to have military significance.

In the nineteenth century, many medieval buildings were demolished, but Vischpoort has survived to this day, as a historic monument. It should be noted, that the doors have been removed from the gate, as they hampered traffic. In 1992, the doors, which are almost always open, were returned to their historic place as a decorative component of the tower.
