Manawatu-Wanganui. Tongariro Volcano. Northern Part
New Zealand fire mountain, Tangariro, is 1,978 meters high and has more than one crater. At least 12 peaks of this mountain have erupted at least once. Tongariro erupts typically for stratovolcanoes, with lava and tephra. The last eruption was recorded in August 2012.
In the winter (from March to October) Tongariro is covered with snow, this is explained by the height and the corresponding climate. Icing often occurs on the slopes after rainfalls. In the summer, the slopes can be almost completely bare, except for some islands of snow on the south side.
