Ruapehu District. Ruapehu Volcano and Mount Ngauruhoe
Ruapehu is a volcano consisting of three peaks: Tahurangi (the highest point of the Northern Island, 2,797m), Paretetaitonga, and Te Heuheu, with a volcanic crater in the middle. Ruapehu, along with two other volcanoes, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, is a part of the National Park.
In the 20th century, the main eruptions of Ruapehu occurred about every 50 years: 1895, 1945 and 1995-96. Plus, there has been 60 inessential eruptions since 1945.
Excursions around this park will take you from the Alpine slopes to the surreal landscape of craters, colored lakes, and volcanic rocks.
