White Island (Whakaari). Volcano Crater

The Island-Volcano, White Island, is located 48 km from the coast of the North Island of New Zealand. In June 2000, a project was implemented which enabled volcanologists to continuously monitor the state of the volcano with the help of CCTV cameras. In addition to video cameras, special equipment was installed on the walls of the crater.

The eruptions over the period of 1983˗1987 changed the landscape of the island and destroyed extensive forests of pohutukawa. At that time, a big crater was formed containing a lake, the level of which varies significantly.
