Innerkrems. Panorama of the Nockberge National Park
The Nockberge National Park occupies an area of 184 square kilometers in the territory of Carinthia. It was founded in 1987 and got its name after the Noсk Mountains. These mountains, unlike the usual rocky Alpine peaks, have round hilly forms, covered with forests, meadows and pastures.
The park is inhabited by rare and endangered species of animals, and the flora of the Alpine meadows is under the strictest protection. In 2012, the UNESCO Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization granted it the status of a biosphere reserve. There are about 631 biosphere reserves around the world, 5 of which are located in Austria.
The national park is located at an altitude of 1,300-2,400 meters above sea level. Through it passes a high-altitude road, along which you can find several hotels and restaurants, as well as observation platforms.
In the park, tourists can see gray and green alder, Celtic backgammon, edelweiss, clematis, mountaineer and jasmine, bearded bells and other plants. The fauna is represented by ferrets, beavers, mountain hares, martens and mice. Larger animals include wild horses, mountain sheep, lynx and deer.
