Buenos Aires. The Obelisk

Each world capital can be represented by a monumental building. Paris is represented by the Eiffel Tower; Moscow, by the Kremlin; Buenos Aires has an obelisk, built on Avenida Nueve de Julio in 1936.

The height of the obelisk is almost 68 meters, but in the old days, it was possible to see the monument from a distance; now, it is often hidden by skyscrapers.

The tetrahedral obelisk was built in the center of the Republic Square to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the city. Here, at the crossroads of July 9 Street and Corrientes, the Argentine flag was posted for the first time several centuries ago.

The design of the obelisk is quite simple, so it is not surprising that its construction took only 4 weeks. It became a popular place in Buenos Aires at once. Football fans gather here, and holidays and concerts are also held at this place.

In 2005, a major restoration of the monument was completed; it was repainted into a “Parisian stone.” On December 1 of the same year, a pink condom was put on the obelisk on AIDS Day.
