The extensive mountainous region of Gorenjska, encompassing the southeastern spurs of the Alps, extends to the northwest of Ljubljana.

Gorenjska is a terrain of pointed ridges, narrow valleys, clear mountain lakes and picturesque waterfalls and glaciers, slipping from the mountain peaks and vast stony screes. These are the highest mountains of the country, with the famous Triglav Mountain, which is the national symbol of the Slovenes and is imprinted on the state emblem.
