Es Coll d'en Rabassa. Palma de Mallorca Airport

We are heading toward the west coast of the island of Mallorca. From the area of Coll d’en Rabassa, located on the coast of the Balearic Sea, we are observing the takeoff and landing of aircrafts over the airport of Palma de Mallorca. This airport was opened in 1960. The need for it was dictated by the increasing flow of tourists to the island every year.

To date, this largest airport of the Balearic Islands ranks third in passenger traffic among all airports in Spain. The leaders, of course, are Madrid and Barcelona.

Throughout its history, the number of passengers passing through the airport has steadily been increasing, and in 2016, Palma de Mallorca served more than 26 million customers.

At the beginning of the last century, near the coast of Mallorca, seaplanes landed; so the history of local aeronautics began much earlier than the construction of a modern airport. Now, in the midst of the summer season, the airport serves up to 1,100 flights a day, which is comparable to that of London’s famous Heathrow Airport. According to plans in the coming years, the airport’s passenger traffic should increase to 38-40 million people a year.
