Trenton. New Jersey State Capitol

On your screen, you can see the entrance to the building in which the General Assembly and New Jersey Senate sit, as well as the offices of the governor and vice-governor, in the New Jersey State Capitol. The camera is installed on the opposite side of West State Street.

The original New Jersey Legislature was located in Perth Amboy. It moved to Trenton in 1790, when the city received the status of the capital of the state. It is noteworthy that at the end of 1784, Trenton was the capital of the USA. But, the southern states were against it and favored the choice of a city that would be closer to the Mason-Dixon line.

The first version of the Capitol was built in 1792 and was a 2.5-story building with a central hall and bell tower. Part of this building is still included in the general architectural ensemble of the Capitol. Fifty years later, the northern wing was attached to the building, which burnt down almost completely at the end of the 19th century, as a result of a major fire. Along with the reconstruction, it was decided to increase the rotunda with a dome, to give the building more proportional features.

The New Jersey State Capitol is located in northwestern Trenton, on the banks of the Delaware River, where the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania runs.
