This town was destroyed a few times during the venetian occupation (by an earthquake, by a pirate attack and finally by the Venetians themselves, which did not want to give up the city to the Turks) and later conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Sitia has its own Airport and is served by a port which connects the town and eastern Crete with several other Greek islands. European route E75, which ends in Vardø, starts, by the way, also here.
