Liezen District. View of Wildalpen from Mount Hochkar

Hochkar peak (1808 meters high) offers beautiful views of the Austrian Alps. Here, on the border of the two federal states of Lower Austria and Styria, is a popular ski resort.

In addition to the twenty kilometers of ski slopes, served by nine cableways, there are huts where tourists, traveling through the mountains during the summer months, can stay.

Hochkar is also known by its cave, Hochkarschacht. Despite the fact that it is only the third largest in Lower Austria, it is much more popular than other caves because it is vertical or, in other words, it’s a pit cave. Its height is 130 meters and the total length is 700 meters.

You can see a small settlement, Wildalpen. The village, with a population of only 1,000 people, is one of the largest sources of water for the Austrian capital. From here, 220,000 cubic meters of water go to Vienna daily.
