Pfarrwerfen. Tauern Autobahn
A10 Motorway (also known as Tauern Motorway) is the main road in Austria running from the north to the south. It connects the border town of Villach, located next to Italy and Slovenia, with Salzburg and the German Autobahn 8.
The length of A10 is almost 200 kilometers. As you can see, it was not easy to build the autobahn because it went through several Alpine valleys with variable relief. It is not surprising that several sections of the road had to be laid inside the mountains. There are 14 tunnels, with a total length of 24 kilometers, along A10.
The road passes not only through high Alpine peaks but also across several valleys, which is why it was necessary to erect high bridges, such as Kremsbriukke, which is 2.6 kilometers long and almost 100 meters high.
The construction of the highway began in 1938, when the route of the future road was laid. Due to the Second World War, A10 was finally put into operation in 1968. The road is constantly being modernized, with new bridges and tunnels added.
Several sections of the highway are paid, like many other roads in Austria, where builders had to dig tunnels or construct expensive bridges.
