The rotary camera on the southern slope of Mount Le Grand Châtelard shows us the French village of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. The fame of this once quiet village was brought in the sixth century by St. Thekla, who brought the sacred relics of John the Baptist from Egypt.

The camera, turning from the east to the southwest, shows the A43 autoroute built along the mouth of the Arc River, the slopes of Mount Cime Noire, as well as the entire urban development of the community, which fits perfectly into the picturesque nature of the Maurienne Valley.

In Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, tourists come not only to religious places but also to ski resorts. The economy of the community is developing well, not only because of tourism but also due to Alcan’s large aluminum plant.

On the same slope from which we survey the community, is the pilgrimage church of Bonne Nouvelle. The main church of the city, St. John the Baptist Cathedral of the eleventh century, is at the foot of the mountain, in the center of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
