Reykjavík. Austurvöllur Square

Austurvöllur Square is the main public city square in Reykjavik. The House of Parliament and the Domkirkjan, the oldest church in the city, are two main touristic sights located on the square. Thanks to many restaurants and cafes situated on it, Austurvöllur Square has become a popular meeting point for local citizens.

Traditionally it also serves as a place for public protests because of it is close location to the Parliament of Iceland.

The statue of Jón Sigurðsson (who was leader of Iceland’s independence movement and whose birthday has been chosen as Iceland’s National Holiday) stands in the middle of the square.
