Macugnaga. Belvedere Glacier

A unique view of the Belvedere Alpine Glacier opens to us from a height of 1,950 meters above sea level. The camera is part of a high-altitude weather station. The glacier is formed by the descent of snow and ice from giant peaks, along which the border between Italy and Switzerland runs. All these mountains, whose height exceeds the mark of 4,500 meters, belong to the mountain range of Monte Rosa.

Belvedere is one of the few moving Alpine glaciers. In many ways, such a unique natural phenomenon is associated with an increase in temperature on the eastern slopes of Monte Rosa. Due to the collapse of ice, the new lake of Effimero has been growing in size on the glacier, since 2001.

In 2012, a deep half-kilometer cave was discovered in the Belvedere Glacier.

Next to the weather station, anyone can spend the night in the mountain huts, Rifugio Ghiacciai Del Rosa or Wengwald Hutte. The bulk of tourists get to the glacier by cableway, but the most desperate travelers cross the mountain slopes on foot.
