Manawatu-Wanganui. Tongariro Volcano. Te Maari Crater

The volcanic massif, Tongariro, has a height of 1,978 meters. It appeared 275,000 years ago and consists of 12 crest peaks. The most active is Ngauruhoe, which erupted 70 times between 1839 and 1977.

Te Maari is not so active, but it erupted not long ago, in 2012, after 115 years of calm. After a month of increased activity, on August 6, 2012, Te Maari erupted, and the ash cloud reached a height of 6.1 kilometers. Mount Tongariro erupted again on November 21, lifting a cloud of ash 4 kilometers into the air.
