Turracher Höhe. Turrachsee
We are on the border of the two Austrian Länder, Styria and Carinthia. We are looking at the Turracher Höhe mountain pass from the eastern slopes of the local ski resort.
Due to the lake, which you see on the screen, there are a lot of tourists in the village, even after the closure of the ski slopes. Turrachsee has a depth from 13 to 33 meters due to its mountainous location (more than 1700 meters above sea level). Six months of the year, it is covered with a thick layer of ice. In summer, you can swim in a special zone where the heated water temperature is artificially increased by 10 degrees. On the shores of the lake, you can find small plants preserved since the Ice Age. We are talking about the dwarf birch, a branched deciduous shrub up to one meter high.
In the neighborhood, there are two more lakes, Turracher-Schwarzsee and Turracher-Grünsee. They are specially protected natural territories of Austria, so the nature around these lakes has remained virtually untouched.
