São Roque do Pico. Mount Pico

On Pico, the second largest island of the Azores, is the highest point of Portugal, Mount Pico, with a height of 2,350 meters above sea level!

The third largest Pico volcano is visible from almost every corner of the island and from many parts of neighboring islands. The peak is an active volcano. The last eruption was in 1963, after which there were traces of lava flows on the slopes, reaching the shores of the ocean. Pico is also recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the mountain with the largest underwater part.

Climbing a mountain usually goes in several stages, since the total height is more than one kilometer! But at each stop, tourists can admire the magnificent scenery of the Azores (if clouds do not hide the neighboring islands) and unforgettable rocky surface of the slopes.

At the top of the mountain, there is a permanent degassing area characterized by the appearance of water vapor.
