Ermoupoli. City Football Stadium

In front of us is a football stadium in the largest city of the island of Syros — Ermoupolis. The city is known for its shipyards and the major industrial port, through which bulk cargo was previously held. Now, the industrial importance of Ermoupolis is fading and the city is developing as a modern resort area.

The city is relatively young (especially if we take into account the Greek settlements on the mainland). The first settlers, refugees from Asia Minor, came here in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Within a few decades, Ermoupolis was referred to as the second largest city, after Athens. But during the twentieth century, the population of the city began to decline dramatically, as transportation ceased to be a lucrative business.

The stadium, which we see on the screen, is located in the southern part of the city; nearby is another major sports facility, the Kolimvitirio swimming pool. Syros Island National Airport is in the same district of the city.
