Domodossola. City Panorama
The view of Domodossola opens to us from the high sacred mountain of Mattarella, which, in 2003, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1656, this mountain was chosen by the monks to establish Golgotha on it. Here, twelve chapels were built, with statues and frescoes illustrating the life of Jesus Christ, as well as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the subject of his Resurrection.
We are looking at the city from the tower of the sacred mountain. Not far from it, just after the arrival of the monks at Mattarella, the octagonal sanctuary of Santa Croce was built. Before the believers settled here, Mattarella was home to a medieval castle that was destroyed in 1415 by Swiss soldiers. Today, tourists can only look at the ruins of the once magnificent building.
The new owners of the mountain, Capuchin, came to Mattarella from Domodossola. Thanks to the support of the local population and the rulers of the city, several main buildings were built in the shortest possible time.
From the mountain, we can see the general architectural plan of the Italian city, the railway passing through it, and the Alpine peaks in the background of the image. Domodossola is an important transport hub of Europe because the Simplon Tunnel joins the railways of two neighboring states, Italy and Switzerland.
