Gravellona Toce. Church of Saint Peter the Apostle

Small Italian towns in the mountains are building new industrial zones in close proximity to the historic center. Gravellona Toce is no exception. The camera is installed next to a large traffic junction, built at the confluence of Flume Toce and Torrente Strona (the second channel runs parallel to the road that you see on the screen). If you turn the camera to the west, you will see large shopping centers of the town, with spacious parking lots.

Against modern buildings, you can see the Alpine slopes and the medieval architecture of Gravellona Toce. On the opposite bank of Strona, we can see the roofs of old houses, as well as the high bell tower of the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle.

The ancient church was consecrated by Bishop Giovanni Battista Visconti on the occasion of his pastoral visit to Gravellona Toce, on August 17, 1696. But, the original design of the church was much more modest than its contemporary one. The bell tower, made of 1,856 blocks of pink granite, was completed in 1930; and even earlier, in 1862, the parish was significantly enlarged, and the facade was completed in the neo-Renaissance style.

The interior painting of the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Interior design was done by the artist, Pietro Borzoni. The church has three beautiful naves, separated by columns with cross vaults.
