Province of Bolzano. View of Bolzano from Mount Gantkofel

We are in Italy, in the province of Bolzano. We are looking at the eponymous capital of the province from the top of Gantkofel. This peak is located on the northern end of the 35-kilometer-long mountain range, on the border of South Tyrol and Trentino.

The camera shows the location of Bolzano, literally built amidst several high mountains. At the beginning of the first millennium there was a swamp, owned by one nation or another, and only in the twelfth to thirteenth centuries did the town, under the control of the Tyrol County, appear there.

Because of its proximity to the border with Austria, almost a third of the population of Bolzano belongs to the German language group. Naturally, this neighborhood was reflected in the life of the town, many architectural landmarks are built in mixed Italian and German styles. For example, the Gothic cathedral, the construction of which began in 1295 and was finished in the first decade of the fifteenth century. Later, the 65-meter bell tower was built there.

Despite the fact that the Province of Bolzano is famous for its ski resorts, a lot of fans of mountain hiking stay in the city.
