Vilnius. Cathedral Square

The camera of the five-star Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square is directed towards the Cathedral Square in Vilnius.

In the foreground, we can see the bell tower of the Cathedral, the height of which is more than fifty meters. Do not be surprised that the upper and lower parts of the bell tower are so different from each other because the base was built in the thirteenth century, while the superstructure dates back to the eighteenth century.

The square itself is located on the right side of the image. Religious, national and public holidays are held on it. The Cathedral of St. Stanislaus is the dominant feature here.

This temple was founded in 1387, on the site of an ancient pagan temple. Throughout its history, the cathedral has repeatedly suffered from fires but, each time, it has been restored and rebuilt.

Some parts of the church are also noteworthy, such as the Chapel of St. Casimir and History Museum, located in the southern part of the Cathedral Square.

The cathedral has an honorary status of small basilica (a special title for the Catholic Churches, assigned either by the Pope, personally, or by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments).
