Venice. Panorama of the Island of Murano
We are on Murano Island in the Venetian lagoon, to the north of the main island. Everyone knows about the famous Murano glass, but a few get to landmarks of Murano. This camera is installed in one of these sites, the lighthouse Faro di Murano, and directed towards the center of the island.
In the center, we can see the highest tower of San Pietro Martire Church. It was built over several decades and was consecrated in 1417, but the original structure was not preserved to this day because of the fire in 1474. The building which you can see, dates back to 1511. The bell tower, which is towering over the whole island, was built at the same time. The church is one of two parishes on the island of Murano.
Tourists can learn more about the famous Murano glass in the glass museum. Founded in 1861, the museum is located in Palazzo Justinian, but it opened only in 1923. At the same time, the island of Murano was officially joined to Venice.
