One of the largest towns in the Azores, with a population of 7,000 people (this is about half of the total number of inhabitants of the island), is Horta. It is located on the east coast of the island of Faial. We are looking from the quay at the main marina of Horta, which is considered an important intermediate point for vessels crossing the Atlantic.

The seafarers began to explore the island of Faial from the east coast. The first buildings appeared here at the turn of the 15th˗16th centuries. Horta got into the history books thanks to its bay being the first stop on the route of an American seaplane on the first transatlantic flight.

One of the main components in the economy of both the town and the whole island is tourism. Cruise ships and airplanes (Horta airport is built along the southern coast) bring fans of interesting expeditions to the island, especially whale watchers.

In clear weather, the highest point of Portugal, Mount Pico, on the island of the same name, is clearly visible in the background.
