Northampton. Botanical Garden

The camera, mounted on the main building of Burton Hall at Smith College in Massachusetts, is directed toward the Botanical Garden. We can see the road to College Lane and the embankment of Paradise Pond. The College Botanical Garden contains a unique collection of herbaceous plants, trees, and shrubs. In addition to the winter gardens that we see on the screen, there are open-air gardens on campus.

The history of the Botanical Garden began in the 1880s, when the college entered into an agreement with Olmsted Brothers, one of the most famous companies in the United States. This company developed a general college plan, as well as a landscaping project.

The Botanical Garden has more than a thousand species of shrubs and trees, about 2,000 grassy plants, and more than 3,000 greenhouse plants. In total, it has 10,000 types of plants.

The camera shows us the college’s main greenhouse, the Lyman Conservatory, founded in 1895. Its area is 1,100 square meters. The greenhouse contains one of the best collections of tropical, subtropical, and desert plants in the country.
